Lucca is easily accessible via several nearby airports. We recommend flying into Pisa International Airport (PSA) or Florence Airport (FLR). Pisa is roughly 30 minutes from Lucca, and Florence is approximately 1 hour away. Flying into Rome (FCO) is another option for those looking for a direct flight to Italy from overseas, with train connections to Lucca taking approximately 3 to 3.5 hours. Note, Pisa is mainly served by European low-cost carriers (RyanAir, EasyJet, Transavia, etc.).

From the Pisa airport take the <a href="https://pisa-mover.com/en/shuttle-service/" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">PisaMover</a> tram to the main central station Pisa Centrale. It will take ~5 minutes to get to the central station from the airport. From the central station, you can take a direct train to Lucca.

From the Florence airport, take the <a href="https://firenze-airport.it/en/passengers/transports/tramway" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Tramvia Line T2</a> from the airport to Firenze Santa Maria Novella (SMN), Florence’s main train station. The tram ride takes about 20 minutes and stops just outside the station. From Firenze SMN, regional trains to Lucca run regularly and take approximately 1 to 1.5 hours, depending on the route. For the train, we recommend using the <a href="https://www.trenitalia.com/it.html" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Trenitalia</a> website to check schedules and purchase tickets.

From the Florence airport, there is also a bus option to Lucca. Take the T2 tram from the airport to Guidoni (it’s the next stop after the airport), then board Autolinee Toscane’s regional bus line “DD” toward Lucca. For the most accurate timetables, check <a href="https://www.at-bus.it/en" rel="noopener noreferrer" target="_blank">Autolinee Toscane</a> website.

Renting a car can be a great option if you would like extra flexibility, especially if you plan to explore more of Tuscany or other parts of Italy before or after the wedding. That said, a car will not be required for the wedding weekend. Taxis, trains, and local transportation will be readily available for getting to and around Lucca. Car rentals are available at Pisa (PSA), Florence (FLR), and Rome (FCO) airports. If you plan to rent a car and prefer not to drive a manual, be sure to request an automatic when booking, as manuals are much more common in Italy. Please note that Lucca’s historic center, like other city centers in Italy, has a ZTL (limited traffic zone). If you are staying within the city walls, we recommend checking with your hotel in advance about parking and permit options. One final note for anyone driving: speed limits in Italy are enforced by automatic cameras, and tickets can show up back home months later. Please mind the speed limit to avoid any surprise tickets!

Travel

Our wedding will take place at Villa Grabau, which is approximately 10 minutes from the center of Lucca by car. There are two main accommodation choices for guests attending the wedding. Staying inside the city walls places you in the heart of Lucca, with easy access to sightseeing, restaurants, and shops within a completely walkable historic center. Staying outside the city walls in a hotel or villa offers a quieter, countryside setting. Our hotel recommendations for both options are listed below, and there are also plenty of incredible Airbnb and Vrbo options available in and around Lucca.

If you’re planning to extend your trip beyond the wedding weekend (we highly recommend it!), Lucca makes a wonderful starting point. October is one of our favorite times to be in Italy, with cooler temperatures, fewer crowds, and beautiful fall light. From Lucca, Italy can offer so much depending on whether you’re looking for coast, countryside, or city.

coastal

If you’re hoping to spend time by the water, we recommend heading to Cinque Terre, which is about 1.5 to 2 hours north of Lucca by train and makes for a great 2–3 night stay with colorful seaside towns, coastal hikes, and scenic views. From Cinque Terre, Portofino is an easy add-on, about 1 to 1.5 hours further north, and offers a fabulous coastal escape. Closer to Lucca, the Versilia Coast is just 30–45 minutes away and is perfect for a relaxed beach-town feel.

Wine Country

If you'd like to continue to explore the Tuscan countryside, we recommend visiting the Chianti region, which is about 1.5 to 2 hours from Lucca by car, for vineyards and agriturismos. From there, if you continue driving south, you can easily string together some of the classic Tuscan towns and landscapes, like San Gimignano, Siena, Val D'Orcia, Montepulciano, Pienza, and Montalcino.

For art, culture, and sightseeing, we recommend adding Florence to visit the Duomo, Ponte Vecchio, and the Uffizi Gallery. Pisa is an easy stop as well, just 30 minutes from Lucca, to visit the Piazza dei Miracoli, home of the Leaning Tower. Rome is approximately 3 to 3.5 hours by train from Lucca and is a great option for a bigger-city experience before heading home.

Livia and Jack first met when they were students at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill. But it wasn't until they both spent the summer of 2019 in Atlanta that things really took off. A first date over tacos at Taqueria del Sol, an afternoon with friends floating down the Chattahoochee, an evening of darts at Ormsby's - and over the course of the summer, their relationship began to take shape. Back at school that fall, they found themselves with a tough decision to make. In just a few months, Livia was going to embark on a 1 year study abroad program in Europe and Asia, and Jack was going to graduate from school. Was it really a good idea to keep seeing each other? Yes, they decided. Let's give it a shot. Well, 1 year of study abroad turned into 6 weeks, when the pandemic halted the world. Livia flew home, Jack's classes moved online, and life as everyone knew it changed. Amongst the uncertainty and challenges of the lockdown, one silver lining was the unexpected time back together and with their families. As Jack’s time at UNC came to a close, he moved to Atlanta, and Livia returned to Chapel Hill to finish her senior year. Frequent visits and FaceTimes kept them feeling close, despite the distance. They were pros by the time Livia decided to move to New York City after graduation. Although they were further apart, Jack and Livia made special memories during this time helping each other move, meeting each others new friends, and exploring new countries. The distance finally came to a close when Jack moved to join Livia in New York City at the end of 2022. Since then, they have made the city their home together, alongside an amazing group of friends. Now, after over 6 wonderful years together, Livia and Jack are overjoyed to be getting married. Their relationship has always spanned cities, countries, and continents, so it feels especially meaningful to gather everyone in one place. They are deeply grateful to those traveling from near and far to celebrate in Lucca and to be part of a story that has always been about choosing each other, no matter the distance.
